Why the hell did they have to disable XPadder?! I wasn't interested in cheating! My control stick is too sensitive!
Since the sound quality of BGM is severe, please give me correction upgrade.
Wonderful games.... horribly optimized engine. This shouldn t stutter on an I5 notebook lol.
It is not reproduced although the resolution of Irem-M72-System-Board is 384*256. It is wanted to be corrected.
Overall a good compilation, with some great hits like R-Type Leo, Undercover Cops, Hammerin' Harry, In the Hunt and a bunch of less known but nonetheless pretty good shoot'em ups.
Waiting for an "Irem Arcade Hits 2" with all the great hits missing this compilation: R-Type, R-Type II, X-Multiply,Risky Cahllenge...
I've greatly enjoyed this collection. While some games are better than others, all of these titles are pretty solid. The collection only has three major shortcomings:
* scratchy sound (though this may be my soundcard)
* no option for Triplebuffering (which eliminates screen-tearing at the cost of some slowdown)
* when playing with an X-Box control, all movement defaults to the left analog stick and there's no way to change it to the D-Pad.
I'm playing version 1.1 so maybe this will all be fixed in a later edition.
I also wish it had included the "Alpha Renewal" version of Undercover Cops and the slightly-harder Japan version of R-Type Leo, instead of the American ones. Perhaps if they ever release an Irem Arcade Hits Volume 2 they can get those out. Please do a Volume 2!
All in all, well worth the fifteen dollars I spent on it.
IREM Arcade Hits does two things that a lot of other arcade retro compilations haven't done to date. Firstly, it has brought a bunch of games from a company that - unlike Namco, Taito and Capcom - hasn't seen a great deal of exposure on modern PCs or consoles. Secondly, it focuses on a period only briefly touched upon by other compilations - the bulk of IAH's games are from the late 80s to early 90s, whereas there is a considerable focus on the mid-80s in other compilations.
To be fair, the selection of games here is really quite good, particularly Legend of Hero Tomna, Kung Fu Master, Hammerin' Harry and Gunforce, which are excellent examples of typical platformers of the period. There are some turkeys here - Superior Soldiers, Irem's blatant ripoff of Street Fighter 2, is an appalling mess, and Vigilante, despite its being well-known in Europe following conversions to all the major 8-bit computers of the time, is a real turkey.
There are some omissions: some forgivable - Kid Niki: Radical Ninja would have been a decent, but not indispensible addition - some are not so forgivable. Most notably, Moon Patrol, R-Type and R-Type 2 are missing from this compilation, an odd thing when you consider that these are the three games for which Irem is actually most famous, even though the excellent R-Type Leo IS present.
The actual emulation of the games is also something that leaves a bit to be desired. In many of the games, the sound is very, very scratchy on just about every PC I've tried the game on, although you do eventually get used to it. There are no options to adjust the aspect ratio of the screen. In all fairness, however, the emulator does use your desktop resolution to determine your screen's aspect ratio and corrects it accordingly. It just would have been nice to have option to have the games (at least the ones with landscape aspect ratios) stretch over the whole of the screen.
Finally, the issue of high scores - although saved to the emulator's own high score table - they are not reflected on the in-game high score tables, which is also a little strange.
while the lack of extras annoy this is an otherwise great collection of obscure and classic arcade games. It would arguably receive a far better audiance on the home consoles, but there's no denying that this is a great legitimate pack of classic arcade games, especially now that you can edit buttons. Look for a review in issue 86 of Retro Gamer magazine.
This collection contains both the world and Japanese versions of Undercover Cops when I looked through the files. I know of no way to access the Japanese version via the collection's menu, though. Anyone know how to play it?
Is it possible to release this collection on a console like PS2 , the Nintendo Wii or even
the Dreamcast . It is great to have the chance to get this Irem-games legal on a PC, but I am more of a console player. But you already deserve many thanks from me and surely from others.
