Apparently you never needed to solve the microscope puzzle to finish the game. I kept trying, but had no luck. This was even with a Pentium 200. The blocks puzzle in the drawer was another annoying one, but even that one wasn't totally necessary for game completion.
♥ it so glad I found this is compatible! I started the sequel and never finished it! Now I can relive and revel in one of the greatest PC games EVER!

Unfortunately, this game is poorly configured by DotEmu.
The 7th Guest can play beautiful General MIDI music (see manual: "recommended hardware"), yet it is configured to play poor sounding FM music. To change this, you have to edit the file "C:\Program Files (x86)\DotEmu\The 7th Guest\The_7th_Guest.bat" with a text editor (such as Notepad). Change the content of this file to the following:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
cd "ScummVM" && start scummvm -p ..\data\ -q en -f -e windows T7G
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Instead of manually editing this file, you can also download this ZIP file containing the edited file:

It's sad that a company that is specialized in the emulation of old games, doesn't even know how to configure them properly!
What a great bit of nostalgia! I first played T7G when I was approx. 11 & could barely solve a puzzle without the strategy guide. 16 years later, I can solve every puzzle (except for the Microscope Puzzle; I'm a graduate student now, and time is limited!)! I can understand why the game was so well-received at its initial release; it remains a beautifully designed piece of work (indeed, stellar soundtrack as well).
I have only one minor complaint. I played T7G on a Macintosh, back in the day; I'm assuming this is a PC emulation. I was somewhat disappointed to observe what seemed to be a noticeable loss in sound quality (i.e. the full orchestral soundtrack I recall from the Macintosh version has been replaced by a MIDI rendering; certain sound effects, e.g. the movement of cans during the Kitchen Letter Puzzle, are absent).
Maybe I've just been spoiled by my memory of the Macintosh version? I would love to see the Macintosh version emulated; I think both old and new fans deserve the fullest rendering of this excellent game!
I haven't had my discs for this game in years, a decade probably. Can't wait to download and play through it again. I still play "Skeletons in My Closet" from the soundtrack on Halloween every year.
BOUGHT IT DONT KNOW NOW TO RUN IT HELP
Version 1.1 works perfectly now on my Asus 1201N and my Acer Revo 1600! Way to go .EMU!
Where is the german version?
7Guest was the first serious game for me on the PC platform. So happy to find it back. Had a small issue during startup in the DOSBOX emulation. However the game is working. Thanks for porting it. I will follow your site for more releases!
