They are easy to understand and figure out with challenging AI, tribes to get aid from, easy to manage population, infinite resources to gather from and overall... fun.
If you like challenging real time strategy games you'll like the American Conquest series.
Being a long-time Age of Empires addict, this game fits in well when I want a different change of pace in a revolutionary/industrial era feel.
They are worth a try for any RTS fan.
